Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are now available to prevent cervical cancer. It is recommended for all girls between 9 years to 16 years.

  • The HPV vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine. It protects against infection of HPV genotypes responsible for most of the cervical cancers. However it does not treat existing HPV infection or cervical cancer/ precancerous lesions.
  • Routine HPV vaccination is recommended for females aged 9 years to 16 years., it may be offered to females up to 45 years.
  • Three doses at 0, 2 and 6 months are recommended as Intramuscular injection.
  • There is no evidence to show that the HPV vaccine adversely affects fertility, pregnancy or infant outcome.
  • The use of the vaccine in pregnancy is not recommended.
  • Women who are planning to conceive are advised to defer vaccination until after delivery.
  • Women who become pregnant before completion of vaccination are advised to postpone the remaining dose until after delivery.
  • Lactating women can receive the HPV vaccine and still continue breastfeeding.

What is Pap Smear?

A Pap Smear is a procedure that is done to detect early cell changes in thecervix to help prevent cancer

By having Pap Smear regularly, treatment can be given at an early stage & so prevent the development of advanced cervical cancer

A paper smear is the single most effective cervical cancer screening procedure!

Colposcopy is a procedure to examine illuminated and magnified view of cervix and lower genital area. Many pre Cancerous lesions can be detected by this test. Colposcopy is recommended for those having abnormal or unclear pap smears.

Vaccination & Screening are the most effective strategies against Cervical Cancer.
